Back for his third season with the Galaxy, Ante Jazic will be looking to put the injuries and disappointment of 2007 behind him in 2008. Capable of playing both as a left back and in the middle, the 31-year old Canadian international has earned 22 caps for his country while establishing himself as one of the most consistent defenders in MLS. He underwent major ankle surgery in late December, ruling him out for the entire preseason and the start of the 2008 campaign, but will look to regain his fitness in time to regain his spot in the Galaxy’s starting XI and help guide the club back to the postseason.

MLS Experience

2007: Appeared in 18 games for the Galaxy, making 16 starts. Jazic was used as both a left back and central defender. A severe ankle injury against New York in August ruled Jazic out for a month but his late season return coincided with the club’s push for a playoff berth. Jazic also missed one game in June after returning from the Gold Cup with a calf injury. He played every minute in every regular season game before departing for the Gold Cup in late June. Jazic also appeared in and started three SuperLiga matches, two Open Cup games and two Reserve Division games. Jazic was suspended for the Galaxy’s SuperLiga semifinal win over D.C. United and then missed the Final through injury.

2006: Jazic was signed by the Galaxy midway through the season, signing from Russian club Kuban Kraznodor, and played in 11 of the 12 regular season games that he was available for. Jazic started and played all 90 minutes in each of the 11 matches in which he appeared. Made his MLS debut two days after officially joining the club at Houston on 8/9 and collected his first and only yellow card of the season in the 61st minute of that match. The Galaxy were 5-5-1 in the 11 games in which Jazic played. He also started three games in the Galaxy’s run to the U.S. Open Cup Final, playing 249 minutes in those contests, including 90 minutes in the Open Cup Final.

Career Highlights

2004-2006: Played for Kuban Kraznodor in Russia. 2001-2004: Moved to the Austrian First Division where he spent three years with Rapid Vienna. 1999-2001: Won two Croatian First Division titles with Hajduk Split, lifting the trophy in 1999 and 2000. 1997-1999: Made his professional debut in Croatia with First Division side Hrvatski Dragovoljac, playing with them for his first two years as a pro.

National Team

Jazic has earned 22 caps with the Canadian National Team since making his debut in May 1998 in Macedonia. Earned his second cap against Guatemala in 1999 but then was out of the National Team scene for nearly four years before he was brought back by former Galaxy coach Frank Yallop in 2003. He appeared in six of Canada’s World Cup Qualifiers in 2005 and played in every game for Canada at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup as Canada reached the semifinals.

College Highlights

Jazic played one year of college soccer at Dalhousie University in Halifax, helping the school to their first ever National Championship, before signing his first professional contract in Croatia.
