A versatile player who played up front, in the back and in midfield during his four-year college career, Brandon McDonald will likely feature as a defensive midfielder or along the backline during his first season in MLS. After four years at the University of San Francisco, the Galaxy took McDonald in the fourth round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. The 22-year old scored 11 goals, three game-winners, in 72 games during his college career, helping the Dons reach the NCAA Tournament three times.
MLS Experience
A fourth round pick in this year’s SuperDraft, McDonald has been a revelation this season as one of Ruud Gullit’s first choice central midfielders. Good on the ball and strong in the tackle, McDonald has gotten better with every game this season and is growing more comfortable in his role every day.2008: Made his MLS debut as a halftime substitute in the season opening 4-0 loss @ COL on 3/29… Earned his first start of the season in the 2-0 win vs. SJ on 4/3… Was shown his first yellow card of the year in the win vs. CHV on 4/26… Was shown his second yellow card of the year in the second half of the 2-2 draw @ RSL on 5/3… Collected the first assist of his MLS career as he set up Chris Klein for the Galaxy’s first goal in the 25th minute of the 5-1 win @ FCD on 5/18… Missed his first game of the season when he was an unused substitute in the 3-2 win vs. COL on 6/7… Missed the 2-1 loss vs. NE on 7/4 because of a left foot injury.
College Highlights
2007: McDonald played 16 games and made 15 starts primarily as a midfielder during his senior season. He scored his only goal of the season with a late header in a 2-1 win over St. Mary’s on 10/28. He also added two assists on the season.2006: He started each of the Dons first 13 games before an off-field injury ended his season. McDonald scored the game-winning goal at San Diego on 10/8 in his last game of the season on a long range effort from 25-yards out. He picked up his only assist of the season exactly one month earlier in the 2-0 win over Penn State on 9/8.
2005: Scored three goals and added one assist as a sophomore. He had his second career multi-goal game, scoring twice, including the game winner, vs. Florida International. He also tallied in the Dons win at San Diego. McDonald’s lone assist came on the game-winning goal vs. St.Mary’s.
2004: Started his college career as a forward, scoring five goals and three assists, both of which were career-highs, to finish second on the team in scoring. Three goals and two assists came in West Coast Conference play and he was named All-WCC Second Team. He scored his first career goal with a penalty kick in USF's 1-1 draw with #1 ranked UC Santa Barbara. He added a goal vs. LMU and then added two more in a 4-1 win over Portland in WCC action. He assisted on Aaron Chandler's goal that clinched the WCC title vs. Gonzaga in a 1-0 win. McDonald also scored a goal to tie NCAA tournament contest vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-2.
Personal
McDonald is the son of Traci McDonald. He has a sister, Jessica who is currently attending the University of North Carolina on a soccer scholarship. McDonald’s mother is one of nine children.
