One of the breakout stars for the Galaxy in 2007, Mike Randolph is back for his third season with the Galaxy. A former USL First Division Rookie of the Year finalist with the Portland Timbers, Randolph made his MLS debut early last season and went on to appear in 19 games, making 15 starts, most of which were in the second half of the season. His strong performances on the left side of the Galaxy defense caught the eye of the National Team coaches as well, as Randolph was twice named to the U.S. Under-23 National Team, leaving him in consideration for selection to the 2008 Olympic team as they attempt to qualify for the Beijing Games.
MLS Experience
2007: Transformed from a bench player into one of the best left backs in MLS. He made his MLS debut as a second half substitute in the 2-1 loss to FC Dallas on 4/12 and made just two more appearances in the league before being thrust into the starting lineup for the first time on August 12 in New England. He would go on to appear in each of the final 16 regular season games, making 15 starts for the Galaxy. He recorded his first career assist on Gavin Glinton’s game-winning goal late in the second half of the 1-0 win at Kansas City on Sept. 27. Randolph started all three of the Galaxy’s Open Cup matches and each of the final two matches of SuperLiga. With the Galaxy trailing 1-0 late in second half stoppage time of the SuperLiga Final against Pachuca, Randolph hit the crossbar with an acrobatic header, allowing Chris Klein to convert the rebound and send the match to extra time. Randolph also appeared in and started five games for the Galaxy Reserves.2006: Came to the Galaxy on Sept. 15 after being signed from the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division. He was not in the 18-man roster for any of the Galaxy’s final five games of the season, but he did appear in and start four Reserve Division games, playing 424 minutes.
USL Highlihghts
2007: Spent time on loan with the California Victory in July and August, playing 333 minutes while making five appearances and three starts. He returned to the Galaxy prior to the August 5 match at Toronto FC and remained with the club for the remainder of the season.2006: Was one of three players named as a finalist for USL First Division Rookie of the Year honors after playing 25 games with the Portland Timbers. Randolph ranked third on the team in minutes played with 2,170, tallying one assist in that time. He started all 25 of the games in which he appeared before signing for the Galaxy at the conclusion of the Timbers’ season.
National Team
Randolph received his first-ever call-up to the U.S. National Team at any level in December 2007 when he was included in Peter Nowak’s U.S. Under-23 squad. That group played a pair of games in China, with Randolph appearing in both. He made his National Team debut as a second half substitute in the 0-0 draw with China in Changsha on Dec. 13. Three days later, on Dec. 16, Randolph got his first start, playing the opening 45 minutes in a 3-3 draw with China in Guangzhou. Since that initial camp, Randolph has been included in each of Nowak’s last two camps, leaving Randolph in consideration for a roster spot at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
College Highlights
Played two years at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., helping the Roughriders reach the NJCAA National Semifinals twice. In his two years at the school, Yavapai compiled a record of 47-4, losing just twice in the regular season. As a freshman in 2004, Randolph was named the ACCAC Player of the Year and helped Yavapai reach the National Semifinals. One year later, the Roughriders went one step further by reaching the National Championship where they lost 3-1 to Georgia Perimeter College, denying Yavapai of its sixth National Championship.
