Back for his fourth season with the Galaxy, Troy Roberts will be looking to improve on his career-highs of 16 games played and two goals scored in 2007. The 24-year old former Galaxy first round pick can play as either a central defender or as a right back and is one of the club’s most physical defenders. A member of the Galaxy’s Double winning side in 2005, Roberts saw hip and groin injuries limit him early last season but will look to put those memories behind him and be fully fit in 2008.

MLS Experience

2007: Set a new career-high with 16 games played in the league in 2007, starting 12 games and scoring the first two goals of his MLS career. Both goals came late in the season as the Galaxy fought for a playoff spot. His first goal came in the 2-1 win at Columbus on Sept. 30 as he deflected a cross past Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer to tie the score at 1-1 in the 13th minute. Roberts tallied his second goal of the year just over two weeks later in the 1-1 draw with New York on October 18, heading home a Lanndon Donovan cross to give LA an early 1-0 lead. Roberts also appeared in and started four SuperLiga matches and made one appearance in the Open Cup, as well as playing two Reserve Division games, despite missing significant amounts of time with hip and ankle injuries.

2006: In his second MLS season, Roberts appeared in 14 games, making 10 starts at left back, right back and center back. He collected his first career assist on 8/20 in a 2-0 win over FC Dallas. Roberts started that game in central defense and his long ball from the back freed Landon Donovan to score the eventual game-winning goal in the 26th minute. Suffered a right groin strain on 8/26 against D.C. United and missed the final two months of the season as a result. Roberts also appeared in and started four Reserve Division games for the Galaxy, playing 316 minutes.

2005: Made his MLS debut on 6/4 in a 2-2 draw with the MetroStars, playing all 90 minutes at right back. He would go on to make 14 appearances, starting nine games and playing a total of 822 minutes. Also made nine Reserve Division appearances, making eight starts and scoring one goal in 707 minutes of action.

College

Started and played all 84 games during his four year college career at Cal, scoring two goals and helping the Bears reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons. A two-time All-Pac-10 First Team performer, in 2003 and 2004 when Cal recorded 18 clean sheets in 42 games, Roberts was also named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team as a sophomore in 2002 and received Honorable Mention honors as a freshman in 2001.

National Team

Roberts was invited into three camps for the U.S. Under-20 National Team in 2002 and also represented the U.S. Under-18 National Team as a high school senior in 2000, traveling throughout the United States and overseas to Holland and Portugal, for tournaments.

Personal

Born and raised in the Bay Area by his parents Margaret and Will, as well as Neville Roberts, his Jamaican birth father, Roberts attended the University of California – Berkeley where he was a Social Welfare major. His younger brother Jamil was selected in the Fourth Round of the 2008 MLS Super Draft by FC Dallas and his sister Afiya plays soccer at the University of San Francisco.

Acquired

Selected by the Galaxy in the first round (8th overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.
