One of the most experienced defenders in all of MLS, Greg Vanney returns for a second stint with the Galaxy in 2008. The 33-year old, who is capable of playing as both a left back and a central defender, began his MLS career with the Galaxy in 1996 and spent six seasons with the club before plying his trade in France for three years. He was at the heart of a United defense that won the Supporter’s Shield in 2007 and he will be looking to repeat the feat in 2008 with the Galaxy.
MLS Experience
2007: Vanney split the 2007 season between Colorado and D.C., playing in a total of 24 games. After Colorado acquired him in a draft day trade with FC Dallas, he played nine games for the Rapids before being traded to D.C. in exchange for Facundo Erpen. Vanney proved to be the veteran presence that United needed at the center of its defense. He made appearances in 15 games (14 starts) and was a big contributor to the United defense that allowed the third fewest goals in MLS (34).2006: In his second season with FC Dallas, Vanney earned starts in 28 regular season games and spent a total of 2,510 minutes on the pitch. He notched a goal and an assist during regular season play and then dished out two assists in two playoff games and earned MLS All-Star honors for the third time in his career.
2005: Vanney returned from French side Bastia for his seventh MLS season. The defender was signed by FC Dallas and made 25 appearances (all starts), totaling 2,210 minutes on the field. He started in each of the team's two playoff games and tallied an assist. He was named to his second MLS All-Star team.
2001: In his sixth and final season with the Galaxy, Vanney continued to improve. He scored six goals and dealt out three assists in 22 games (all starts), compiling 2,032 minutes on the field. He started each of LA's six playoff games (536 minutes) and contributed an assist, as he helped LA advance to the MLS Cup final. He was named as a member of the MLS Best XI for the second year in row
2000: Vanney had one of his best seasons to date, as he tallied six goals (5-6 on penalty kicks) and two assists in 27 matches (all starts). He also added a goal and an assist in five playoff games (all starts). For the first time, He was named All-Star team and as a part of the MLS Best XI.
1999: Starting in each of the 31 matches he played in for Los Angeles (2,790 total minutes), Vanney collected one goal and a career high seven assists. He helped lead the Galaxy to the MLS Cup final where the team lost for the second time ('96 MLS Cup) in four years to D.C. United.
1998: In his third season as a member of the Los Angles Galaxy, Vanney played in al but one of the Galaxy's 32 matches (27 starts). He scored three goals and three assists during the regular season.
1997: Vanney earned starts in 27 of the 28 games he saw time in, after having surgery on a fractured fifth metatarsal prior to the season. He finished the year with a goal and three assists, as LA finished second in the five-team Western Conference.
1996: Drafted in the second round (17th overall) of the MLS College Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy, Vanney immediately stepped in as a difference maker. He made 29 appearances (24 starts) and scored four goals and an assist over 2,236 minutes. He helped LA to the MLS Cup final, notching two goals in six games (all starts), before falling to D.C. United 3-2.
Career Highlights
2002-2005: After the 2001 MLS season, Vanney signed a contract with French First Division club SC Bastia. He made 11 straight starts during the team's 2001-2002 campaign, as he helped the team to the French League Cup Final. In all, he made 60 appearances for Bastia.
National Team
Vanney made 37 appearances for the U.S. during his 10-year National Team career, helping the Red, White and Blue qualify for the 1998, 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups. Vanney was named as an alternate for the U.S. squad at the 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea and was briefly added to the 23-man roster following a pre-tournament injury to Chris Armas, only to suffer a knee injury himself, ruling him out of the tournament. He made his U.S. debut on December 12, 1996 in a World Cup qualifying match versus Guatemala and last played for his country in a World Cup qualifier, also against Guatemala in 2005.
College Highlights
Vanney played three years at UCLA from 1993-1995, tallying 14 goals and 19 assists for the Bruins. As a senior in 1995, he was named All-American honorable mention after finishing the season with 8 goals and 10 assists. He attended Florida International University in 1992 and played 20 games for FIU before transferring to UCLA.
Personal
Born in South Boston, Va. and raised in Tempe, Ariz., Greg is the son of William and Jeanette and has a brother Jim, and a sister Kristi. Greg is married to Amy and the couple have three children Kaia (4) and Dylan and Mason (twins, 3 months). He is the founder of Arizona Futbol Club, a club team that began in 1997.
