Kicks for Kids: LA Galaxy v. NY Red Bulls (May 10, 2008)
Although the Galaxy was defeated Saturday night by the New York Red Bulls, their fans were not. The children in the Kicks for Kids (KFK) section could not contain their excitement as many of them took in their very first Major League Soccer game. Cheers prevailed, as the KFK section could be heard across the entire stadium chanting "GALAXY! GALAXY! GALAXY!" The Kicks kids had no qualms over heckling the opposing team or showing their disagreement with calls made against the Galaxy; boos were especially loud when one of their favorite players, David Beckham, received a yellow card in the second half of the match. Imperio Bell Gardens was one of the many KFK groups in attendance who displayed such an endless well of energy and delight over the match. Many of the children had never attended a Galaxy game before, and all were happy to see some of their favorite athletes live. As my co-worker and I sat and chatted with the kids, they huddled all around us, rapidly speaking over each other in their excitement to tell us about "their team". In a rush, they would blurt out, "David Beckham is awesome!" or "Carlos Ruiz is the man!" It was especially moving to hear, even with the team on the verge of a loss, one of the children from A Place Called Home optimistically state, "Esta bien [It's ok/It's good]. We're going to win. Plus, I'll always be crazy for the Galaxy." Once again, the Galaxy Foundation and our Kicks For Kids community partners would like to thank all the Kicks For Kids groups in attendance. Your enjoyment is what makes our efforts worthwhile, and we hope to see you all at many more games to come! -Cristina Scotti, Community Development Intern, LA Galaxy |
